Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he barely escaped a potentially deadly collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him

The alarming incident occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were observed on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an quick visit to the pits to swap his compromised front wing

Racer's Instant Response

Moments later, Racing Bulls driver Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was observing"

"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals dashing across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"

Safety Concerns Raised

"Obviously there's been a communication breakdown somewhere but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track track officials can be authorized to just run across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

F1's overseeing organization, the FIA, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was advised that debris was present on the track at the critical section of that bend" commented the governing body

"During the third lap, safety personnel were notified and put on alert to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the directives to deploy officials were withdrawn and a safety warning flag was displayed in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what occurred after that point"
