Former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to making false statements to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

His legal representative entered the answer acting as his counsel in a federal court in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

The defense lawyer declared he would seek to have the proceedings terminated for several reasons including that his defendant, a critic of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

Mr Comey was charged soon after the former president pushed his top legal official to take action against him.

Legal Proceedings

At the proceedings on Wednesday, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald informed the magistrate they planned to present various petitions to dismiss the legal matter before a trial, arguing the government's case was retaliatory and that a US attorney was wrongfully assigned to handle the proceedings.

Mr Comey's case was originally overseen by the original attorney, who resigned under scrutiny from Trump after his probe into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Judicial Environment

James Comey came across in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen, a federal prosecutor who the Trump administration terminated.

After listening to the magistrate read his rights and the dual charges against him in court on Wednesday, James Comey was asked if he grasped the charges.

"Yes your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about four months into Donald Trump's first administration as president. At the period, he was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between the Russian government and the election effort.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey triggered a negative reaction from Democrats when he declared just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee the candidate's use of a personal email system. Indictments against the candidate were never brought, causing criticism from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert James Comey gave untrue statements to US lawmakers during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the Clinton investigation as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he deceived the Senate by saying he had not permitted someone at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to release to media organizations details about the FBI investigations.

Government lawyers also accuse the defendant of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and slow" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.

Public Statements

Through a recording the former director posted to his online platform after he was indicted, he said he was innocent and charged the former president of conducting himself like a "tyrant".

"Our household have known for a long time that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."

"I'm innocent," he added. "Therefore proceed with a legal proceeding."

The accusations against the former director came after Trump shared on digital channels calling for his top legal official, the attorney general, charge James Comey and others.
