Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
